In 2020 I began to work with placentas. This temporary organ represents for me the strongest symbol in a cycle of life and death. Unlike familiar symbols in vanitas still lifes, the placenta is far less familiar. Hybrid works emerge, between nature and technology, analog and digital: animated films, screenshots, paintings, sculptures. On the outside, thin layers of skin pile up; on the inside, greatly enlarged, expansive cave landscapes can be discovered. I dissect and preserve this organ in images to explore its complex meaning: the natural connection between nurturing mother and growing new life, our very first "habitat."
